Even if your turntable isn’t working, the album cover makes for great art for your walls. Get out there and add to your collection. But RSD is all about supporting your local record store that one day and hopefully on many others. Now, with the 16th Record Store Day on its way this Saturday, April 22, vinyl records have come roaring back, and the stores that sell them have come right back with them. But, in a dramatic turnaround, numbers doubled in the first half of the 2010s, and even now, after Covid. The coalition of stores decided to expand RSD to the famous Black Friday day of retail madness at the same time that mainstream stores and platforms have expanded Black Friday to a week or more of sales, both online and in stores. A little more than a decade ago, the decline of the British record shop looked terminal. Record labels have supported the event by releasing special albums or sets on that day. Over the years, the event has grown and can rightly take at least partial credit for the revival of interest in vinyl albums. Record Story Day (RSD) was created in 2007 in order to celebrate independent record stores with a nationwide sale on a Friday in mid-April. (See a complete list below.) Of course, there are thousands more vinyl albums of every genre out there for purchase, both new and used. ![]() ![]() Among the new releases are more than a dozen jazz LPs, including albums from Chet Baker, Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans and Charles Mingus. The stores that make up our coalition are consistently honored in “Best Of” record store lists by national publications such as Rolling Stone, Paste Magazine,, USA Today, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.Record Store Day returns for a Black Friday edition on Friday, November 24, with more than 150 vinyl albums and sets released for sale at more than 1,000 stores throughout the U.S. Some also function as live music venues and gift shops. Many of our stores even carry audio equipment (turntables, speakers, headphones, etc.), music and feature film DVDs, and music paraphernalia such as vintage clothing, t-shirts, posters, figurines, toys, and the like. You will find a deep catalog, rare imports, and the broadest music selection available in our stores – we pride ourselves on that.
